Toyota Tacoma Configurations

2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD

There are a number of different ways in which you can build your Toyota Tacoma, and their MPG ratings may vary. All told, the Toyota Tacoma has six available trim levels. The base trim is the SR, and the available trim levels include:

  • SR5
  • TRD Sport
  • TRD Off-Road
  • Limited
  • TRD Pro

Additionally, there are two different cab styles to choose from. First, the 4-door, 5-passenger Double Cab can be equipped with all trim levels. Meanwhile, the 2-door, 4-passenger Access Cab is only available with the SR, SR5, TRD Sport, and TRD Off-Road trims.

You can also equip the Tacoma with either a rear-wheel-drive or a 4-wheel-drive system, the latter of which is known as 4WDemand. This 4WDemand system may mean less miles per gallon, but it offers superior off-road performance. With this drivetrain, you’ll easily be able to tow your camper to your favorite campground or tackle a rugged worksite.

Finally, you also have two different engine options: the standard 2.7L DOHC 4-cylinder engine and the available 3.5L V6 Atkinson-cycle engine. They can both be paired with either a manual transmission or the standard 6-speed automatic transmission.

Miles Per Gallon

Now that you know about the different options you have with the Toyota Tacoma, it’s time to discuss some of their MPG ratings.

You’ll get the standard EPA-estimated 18 city and 22 highway MPG with the SR trim level when it’s outfitted with the 4WD system and a Double Cab.1 Under the hood, you’ll want to have the V6 engine and pair it up with the automatic transmission.

If you want a more exhilarating driving and off-roading experience, you might want to opt for the Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road trim. When equipped with the V6 engine, automatic transmission, and the 4WDemand system, it also gets the standard MPG rating.

When the SR trim is outfitted with the Access Cab and the rear-wheel-drive system, it gets the highest MPG rating of all configurations. When equipped with the 4-cylinder engine and the automatic transmission, you’ll get an EPA-estimated 20 city/23 highway MPG in this model.1

The Power Behind the Fuel Economy

Both of the available engines offer powerful performances. For instance, the standard 2.7L engine can crank out up to 159 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque. The available 3.5L V6 engine, on the other hand, produces an impressive 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque.

When it’s time to tow your equipment to the jobsite or bring your jet skis out to the lake, the Toyota Tacoma has a maximum towing capacity of 6,800 pounds. Plus, with technologies like Trailer-Sway Control and Hill Start Assist Control, taking command of your haul will be a breeze.

Depending on configuration, this pickup also has a maximum payload capacity of 1,620 pounds for all your cargo that doesn’t require a trailer. You can also choose from a 73.7- or 60.5-inch bed, so you can rest assured that you’ll have enough room to take advantage of all that strength. Plus, the standard deck rail system makes it easy to secure everything you need, from dirt bikes to a stack of plywood.
