How Long Do Brake Pads Last?
Brake pads aren’t a heavy or hulking piece of equipment, but they certainly work to ensure the car you drive every day is safe. The day-to-day drives in Lowell, Dracut and Tewksbury that you make wouldn’t be possible without brakes or brake pads.
Over time, brake pads do wear out and need to be replaced. So, you might ask, “How long do brake pads last?” Of course, like many other components in your vehicle, the answer to that question depends. But at Ira Toyota of Tewksbury, we’ll do our best to get to the bottom of things, and can get you back on the road with brake repair and brake pad replacement. Read on to learn more about how long brake pads last.
Brake Pad Lifespan
The lifespan of brake pads varies from car to car. If you drive mainly in the city and tap the brakes a lot, they’ll wear down faster. If you do a lot of highway driving, the brake pads may last longer. Brake pads typically last 30,000-40,000 miles as a rough estimate, though large amounts of highway driving without much stopping can mean lasting up to about 70,000 miles.
Front brakes will typically break down faster than rear ones, since pressing the brake pedal causes a transfer of weight from the rear to the front. The car’s inertia is forward-moving, so the weight moved forward wears out the front pads first.
If brake pads are squeaking or squealing occasionally, it could just have to do with a temperature change or rust building on the rotors. But if the sound is frequent, that means it’s time to have brake pads inspected and possibly replaced.
How You Can Make Brake Pads Last Longer
Want to extend the life of your brake pads? Follow these tips to make that happen:
Easy does it. Keep speeds lower and avoid braking from high speeds, which can wear down the pads faster.
One’s enough. Keep it to just one foot! Drivers who use their left foot on the brake pedal and right foot on the gas tend to use the brakes more frequently.
The coast is clearer. Instead of waiting to brake at the last second, coast to a stop if possible.
